Primary and Secondary Battery

DEFINATION OF CELL: 

a cell is a basic unit of a battery. it is defined as power generating device, which can converts storage chemical energy into electrical energy.

PRIMARY BATTERY: NON RECHAREABLE

If the stored chemical energy is constitutionally or inherently present in the chemical substances, its called primary cell or non-rechargeable cell. if the battery made up with these kinds of cells the battery is call PRIMARY BATTERY.

EX- zinc chloride cell, alkaline-manganese cell, metal air cell and Leclanche cell.

SECONDARY BATTERY: RECHARGEABLE

If energy induced in the chemical substance by applying energy from out side or external source these type of cell is secondary cell or rechargeable cell.  if the battery made up with these kinds of cells is called SECONDARY BATTERY.

EX-  Lead Acid battery, nickle iron cell, silver zinc cell, nickel hydrogen cell, nickle cadmium cell, lithium chlorine cell, sodium sulphur cell.

CLASSIFICATION OF SECONDARY BARRY: 

Base on their uses there are 3 types.

AUTOMOTIVE BATTERY OR SLI BATTERY OR PORTABLE BATTERY:

These type of Battery used for Starting (S), Lighting (L) and Ignition(I) in internal combustion engine vehicles.

ex- lead acid battery, nickle cadmium battery.

VEHICLE TRACTION OR INDUSTRIAL OR MOTIVE POWER BATTERY:

These types of battery used for provide motive power source for vehicles. these type of battery is advance high temperature battery.

ex- sodium sulphur battery, lithium iron battery, nickle iron battery.

STATIONARY BATTERY:

These type of battery fall into two groups (1) standby power system- which is used intermittently and (2) load levelling system- which stores energy when demand is low and later uses it to meet peak value.

(1) stand by power system- we generally knows as UPS (uninterrupted power supply) - provides

(2) Levelling system- Recently advance lead acid batteries have been used for this purpose in electric generating plant.
