Class 6 Physics Matter

Matter: Anything that have some mass and occupy some space (have volume) is called matter.

Element: Any substance that contain only one kind of atom, that cannot be decomposed into simpler substance by chemical process is called element.

Characteristic of solid with examples.

substance is said to be solid, if it possess "definite volume" and "definite shape".

Example: Wood, Ice, walls, desk, and shoes.

1.Particles are held very close to each other.

2.It have fixed volume.

3.It have a fixed shape.

4.A "strong interaction" is present in between the molecules.

5.Very low intermolecular distances between the atoms.

Characteristic of gas with example.

1. Gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.

2. Gas can be compressed easily

3. Gas have least density among the three state of matter

4. Intermolecular for of attraction is weakest

5. The space between the gas particle is large.

Example: oxygen gas, carbon dyoxide gas etc.

Characteristic of liquid with example.

1. liqued have a fixed volume but no fixed shape

2. Liquid can compressed.

3. Liquid have lesser density than solids.

4. Intermolecular force of attraction is weaker than solid but larger than gas.

5. The space between two particle is larger than solid but lesser than gas.

Example : water, kerosine, murcury etc.
